What Remains of Elsie Jane Finalist for 2023 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award

Dundurn Press is pleased to announce What Remains of Elsie Jane by Chelsea Wakelyn has been recognized as a Finalist in the annual Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards. Congratulations, Chelsea!

Emily Austin calls this magical debut  "a poignant, laugh-out-loud funny, weird, and heartbreaking." When a single mother has lost her soulmate, who has died unexpectedly, her world comes crumbling down. She tries to date too soon, confused by her grief, and she starts to unravel. Is she really capable of time travel, or is she going a little nuts? Examining the ceaseless labour of motherhood, the stigma of death by drug poisoning, and the allure of magical thinking in the wake of tragedy, What Remains of Elsie Jane is a heart-splitting reminder that grief is born from the depths of love.

As part of its mission to discover, review, and share the best books from university and independent publishers, Foreword Magazine, Inc. hosts an annual awards program each year. Finalists represent the best books published in 2023. After more than 2,400 individual titles spread across 55 genres were submitted for consideration, the Finalists were determined by Foreword’s editorial team. Winners will be decided by an expert team of booksellers and librarians—representing Foreword’s trade readership—from across the country.

Winners in each genre—along with Editor’s Choice Prize winners and Foreword’s Independent Publisher of the Year—will be announced June 2024. Learn more here.
