February 1, 2019 (Toronto, ON) - One of the largest independent book publishers in Canada now has new owners and a renewed commitment to the nation’s publishing and content industry.

Dundurn Press, a celebrated success story in Canadian literature since 1972, was recently acquired by a group of experienced technology entrepreneurs, including Randall Howard, Lorne Wallace, and Jason Martin. The three have a track record of supporting the arts in Canada and have been involved in several notable projects across the country.

Dundurn founder and publisher Kirk Howard will stay on as Publisher Emeritus in an advisory role with the company. “I am delighted that this talented team will be bringing their skills and expertise to Dundurn, sustaining its significant role as one of the major Canadian-owned publishers,” Mr. Howard said.

Meantime, the new ownership group says a priority is hiring top senior level talent to run the day-to-day operations. “We are huge supporters of literature and we are fiercely proud Canadians,” says Lorne Wallace. “That being said, our backgrounds are in building successful tech companies. And, while these are valuable skills in any industry, we know we must have experienced, passionate professionals in the publishing sector to lead us forward.”

During the transition period, former Dundurn acquisitions editor Scott Fraser will serve as acting publisher and president. He says this is a great move for authors in this country who are looking for a home for their stories.

“This is an exciting time for Dundurn and it’s an absolute honour for me to continue Kirk Howard’s legacy,” said Mr. Fraser. “You don’t replace a publisher like that. What he has done for Canadian authors is legendary. I promised him that I would work hard every single day to set the conditions for another 45 years of Dundurn books. The new ownership combined with Kirk’s ongoing support and advice is a recipe for succeeding in that goal.”

The new leadership team says it plans on investing in Dundurn’s future with exciting new plans that will be rolled out in the coming months.
