Dundurn Press, a leading independent, inclusive Canadian publisher, is hiring a full-time acquisitions editor in their office in Toronto. The editor’s primary responsibilities are to scout, acquire, and develop YA, mystery, literary fiction, true crime, parenting, self-help, and other non-fiction books. Candidates should be ready to network with agents, house authors, and other partners, negotiate rights, assess manuscripts, and perform structural and developments edits to prepare manuscripts for production.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Scout, commission, propose and sponsor title acquisitions
  • Negotiate primary rights, author advances, author royalties
  • Network and forge relationships with literary agents, house authors, and other partners
  • Assess contracted manuscripts for quality and acceptability
  • Perform substantive edits on contracted manuscripts as necessary
  • Prepare manuscripts and materials for handover to the managing editor/production editor
  • Develop support materials for marketing and rights sales
  • Achieve targets for number of titles, revenue, and profitability
  • Attend book launches, fairs, awards ceremonies, and other industry events
  • Carry out other duties relating to the program that may arise from time to time


  • Publishing certification and university degree (B.A. minimum) or comparable work experience/college qualifications
  • At least 5 years prior publishing experience with a background in editorial but a demonstrated knowledge of sales and marketing. Extensive knowledge of the book publishing industry and its key players
  • Excellent editorial judgement and communication skills (oral and written)
  • The ability to work well independently as well as in collaborative or team environments
  • Other characteristics such as personal characteristics — Outgoing and charismatic (you will be one of the “faces” of Dundurn editorial). Diplomatic, tactful, a capacity for active listening, and negotiation ability
  • Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Excel. Familiarity with Basecamp and Asana
  • Ability to speak, read, and proofread in French is an asset
