He Did Not Conquer & Arctic Predator Shortlisted for the 2026 Ottawa Book Awards for Non-Fiction

Dundurn Press is thrilled to announce that Arctic Predator: The Crimes of Edward Horne Against Children in Canada’s North by Kathleen Lippa, and He Did Not Conquer: Benjamin Franklin’s Failure to Annex Canada by Madelaine Drohan have been shortlisted for the 2026 Ottawa Book Award in the English Non-Fiction category! Congratulations, Kathleen and Madelaine!

Arctic Predator: The Crimes of Edward Horne Against Children in Canada’s North by Kathleen Lippa examines the devastating impact these crimes had on individuals, families, and entire communities. The Seaboard Review says Lippa’s “research is noteworthy, as evidenced by her interviews with individuals connected to the case, including educational officials, law enforcement personnel, and even Ed Horne himself, before his departure from the country.”

He Did Not Conquer: Benjamin Franklin’s Failure to Annex Canada by Madelaine Drohan examines the little-known history of one of America's founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, not previously explored in a meaningful way in Franklin's biographies. Jean Chretien, former prime minister of Canada says “Madelaine Drohan has written a very timely book. Canadians said "non merci" to Benjamin Franklin in 1776. And we continue saying it — loud and clear — to those who threaten our independence 250 years later!”

Since 1985, the Ottawa Book Awards have recognized the top English and French books published in the previous year. Both languages have categories for fiction and non-fiction.

The winners will be announced on Sunday, November 14, 2026.
