Persephone's Children Shortlisted for Two Manitoba Book Awards

Dundurn Press is thrilled to announce author Rowan McCandless has been nominated for two Manitoba Book Awards — the Alexander Kennedy Isbister Award for Non-Fiction, and the Eileen McTavish Sykes Award for Best First Book for her memoir, Persephone’s Children, published under our Rare Machines imprint.

Persephone’s Children chronicles Rowan McCandless’s odyssey as a Black, biracial woman after escaping the stranglehold of domestic abuse, and pushes the boundaries of traditional form through innovative storytelling. Congratulations to Rowan McCandless!

The Manitoba Book Awards / Les Prix du livre du Manitoba celebrates excellence in Manitoba writing, publishing, book design and illustration. The winners will be announced on Thursday, June 9th at 11:00am CST during a virtual ceremony. Learn more here.


Rowan McCandless is an award-winning author of fiction and creative non-fiction, and serves as the creative non-fiction editor for The Fiddlehead. She has been longlisted for the Journey Prize, won the Constance Rooke Creative Non-fiction Prize, and received gold for One of a Kind Storytelling at the National Magazine Awards. Rowan lives in Winnipeg.
