Today we have an author interview with John Scully, author of the new release Am I Sane Yet? Journalist John Scully has covered stories in over 70 countries and 35 war zones. He has suffered from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder for much of that time. Scully is the author of Am I Dead Yet: A Journalist's Perspective on Terror. He lives in Toronto.

Caitlyn: Tell us about your book.

John: Am I Sane Yet?- An Insider’s Look at Mental Illness is the  very personal  story of  one man’s life-long  battle with depression which culminated in my attempted suicide. The book also explores the roots of my  Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) acquired as an international journalist  while recording  major world stories in over 70 countries and 36 war zones. The book also examines the continuing stigmas that engulf the world of the mentally ill; what it is really like in psychiatric hospitals; and how healthcare professionals treat  their patients –sometimes brilliantly, sometimes dreadfully.

Caitlyn: Did you have a specific readership in mind when you wrote your book?

John: I wrote the book for anyone who has a connection with mental illness, especially depression, anxiety, PTSD and suicide. I also wrote it as a protest against those who discriminate against the mentally ill and to  those responsible for the chronic underfunding and deadly wait lists in our psychiatric systems.

Caitlyn: What was the hardest part of writing this book?

John: The hardest part was trying to maintain the highest standards of journalism to which I aspire while being interesting, entertaining, responsible, and using humour  make a point.

Caitlyn: How did you research your book?

John: For accurate research I relied on my diaries, other people’s memories and anecdotes, books about mental illness and extensive use of the Internet.

Caitlyn: Describe  the most memorable response you have received from a reader.

John: My first book,”Am I Dead Yet?” received universal acclamation, Two readers told me it was the best book on journalism they had ever read.
