Life, Death, and Near-Death: Why I Wrote Touched by the Light

My life has been blessed by five powerful Near-Death Experiences (NDEs), two that happened in my childhood, and three that occurred in my adult life, my most recent in 2003.  My first adult Near-Death Experience in a plane crash in 1979 changed the entire course of my life and my career as a medical doctor. While I was close to death, I felt myself overcome with an extraordinary sense of peace, and heard a calming inner voice quoting verses from the Bible: “Be still, and know that I am God.” “I am with you now and always.” I felt my point of perception float up out of my body, then up into a realm filled with light, a realm that exuded a profound, intense vibration of unconditional love. I felt like I was HOME, being embraced by a universal force which I somehow knew to be the Higher Power. When my body was resuscitated later, I suddenly felt myself abruptly sucked back into my body, through the top of my head it seemed.

As a young medical doctor at the time, I searched to try to understand what I had experienced during that brush with death. The experience had a powerful spiritual impact on me, changing my beliefs and values in a far more altruistic direction. It also seemed to open my consciousness to new perceptions, as I began to have new clairvoyant and clairsentient experiences afterwards. As I searched for understanding, I found that my medical colleagues and the current medical literature offered me no explanation, no word, to describe the powerful and impactful experience I had, nor its definite after-effects. It took years of searching until I came to be certain of what I now know: this was a Near-Death Experience, an out-of-body and/or white light mystical experience that sometimes happens to persons when they are close to death, clinically dead and then resuscitated, or facing severe trauma. Research studies have shown that NDE experiencers feel spiritually transformed and often have increased intuitive abilities as after-effects, as I did.

Over the years, more and more of my patients shared stories of their diverse spiritual experiences with me. I was horrified at how so many people were being mistreated and mislabeled as hallucinating, or mentally ill, when they told others of their Spiritually Transformative Experiences (a term I coined in 1994). I felt strongly called as a medical doctor to advocate for NDE and STE experiencers, to stop this harmful mislabeling. Thus in 1990, I publically specialized my medical practice in the research and counselling of persons with NDEs and other STEs, and began to speak publicly about the reality of my own and others’ Near-Death Experiences.

Touched by the Light is a synthesis of what I have learned about NDEs and other STEs in the last forty years. I wrote it as a guide for those who are having these experiences, as well as their family, friends, counselors, and others interested in spiritual awakenings of all kinds. I hope Touched by the Light will help every reader realize that we are all truly spiritual beings, souls wearing a “covering” of our physical body, and that our souls truly live on after death of our body. This is a certainty that I and thousands of others have learned through our Near-Death Experiences. I conclude that we as individuals and as a society need to expand our worldview; STES give us a clear glimpse of that higher reality.
