Quetico’s landscape is dominated by remnants of a glacial past. As the glacier receded near 12,000 years ago, the Paleo-Indians moved into the area to become Quetico's first explorers. Today’s canoeists cross portages and sleep on campsites that were first used by these explorers. At Canoecopia 2010, Jon will introduce you to Quetico’s glacial past, its long and varied human history, and the diverse plant and animal life found in today’s Quetico. Attendees have two opportunities to catch Jon's talk - he will be speaking on Saturday March 13th at 12:30 p.m. and again on Sunday March 14th at 2:30 p.m.
Jon Nelson’s book, Quetico: Near to Nature’s Heart uses thorough research to present an insightful look into the natural history of Quetico Park, long recognized as a gem among parks. Examined are the adaptations that have allowed moose, white-tailed deer, wolves and other mammals to survive, as well as the human history of the park beginning with the Ojibwa living there when the region became a designated park.
