Description
The Donnellys is a dramatic compression of the tragedy surrounding the Donnelly family of Lucan, Ontario. Time-worn feuds of Ireland followed them to this farm community, where hate festered until the eve of February 4, 1880. That night, a group of avenging townspeople slaughtered several members of the Donnelly family. The violence of that act has passed into legeng, but legends die hard, and the Donnellys live on in this gripping, dramatic piece of theatre.
Author
Peter Colley began his theatre career with attending the University of Sheffield in England, where he acquired a firm background as actor, writer, and director. Coming to Canada as an actor with Theatre London, he was commissioned to write The Donellys, which proved to be the most successful play in the theatre‘s seventy-year history. It played to 99.69 percent houses, with thousands more being turned away at the door. A 1976 revival also ran for three weeks at the National Arts Centre, to the same critical acclaim. Mr. Colley‘s next play You‘ll Get Used To It...The War Show, opened to rave reviews in London and Toronto.
